Overview
Function and skin care benefits
Ectoin is a naturally derived amino acid derivative originally discovered in moderately halophilic microorganisms and commercially produced through bacterial fermentation. It is known for its excellent osmoprotective properties and ability to help protect skin from environmental stressors. Ectoin helps maintain skin moisture balance and supports skin barrier resilience under challenging environmental conditions.

Key benefits
Helps maintain long-lasting skin hydration.
Helps maintain skin comfort and resilience under environmental stress.
Helps soothe the appearance of skin stressed by environmental factors.
Helps improve the appearance of dry and environmentally stressed skin.

Efficacy evaluation
crow’s feet area after 28 days (2.0% serum)
A 28-day skin evaluation was conducted on healthy female participants using a serum formulation containing 2.0% Ectoin. The results demonstrated significantly enhanced skin hydration levels and improved overall skin appearance, with crow’s feet area reduced by 23.7% after 28 days of continuous use.
Applications

Solubility
Highly soluble in water and soluble in glycerin.
Stability
Stable across a broad pH range (pH 1–10) with good thermal and oxidative stability under recommended storage and formulation conditions.
Typical applications
Advanced skincare serums / Moisturizing formulations / Eye care products / Soothing and barrier-supporting gels
Recommended usage level
0.5%–2.0%

Formulation guidelines
Solubility & Compatibility — Ectoin has excellent water solubility and high stability in aqueous systems. It is compatible with a wide range of cosmetic active ingredients and excipients.
pH Stability — Exceptional stability across a broad pH range (pH 1–9), providing maximum formulation flexibility.
Dissolution — Recommended to pre-dissolve Ectoin in deionized water or polyols (e.g., glycerin) before incorporating it into the main formulation phase.
Thermal Stability & Process — Outstanding heat tolerance. It can be incorporated during both hot water-phase and cooling stages. Processing temperatures up to 80°C are recommended for optimal formulation performance.
Stability ranges may vary depending on molecular weight grade, concentration, formulation matrix, and processing conditions. Final formulation stability should be confirmed through appropriate stability testing.
